FALL 2010 BEDDING TRENDS: What’s Black and White and “Bed” All Over?

Although it’s sweltering throughout most of these United States, it is one of my favorite times of year! I always get to celebrate “Christmas in July” seeing the gorgeous, cozy bedding trends that will be coming out this fall and winter. This year, the line launch was held at the beautiful M Resort and Spa in Las Vegas. And even though the temperature outside was over 110, inside we could almost hear sleigh bells!

So what did I SEE, right? Ok, here’s are just a few of the biggest trends I spotted in Vegas:

LUXURY. As Mae West said, “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”  Now, I’ve seen faux fur on a bed before, but this ivory and silvery-taupe combo could unleash anyone’s inner Mae West! Plush, luxurious fabrics were EVERYWHERE-not only in bedding but in leopard-lined robes, throws, even faux-mink booties, vests and headbands-talk about your stocking stuffers!

BLACK AND WHITE. This trend lends a bit of jazz-age wit and opulence to your bedroom. Plus? It’s SO versatile and easy to achieve! If this stunning B&W Brocade pattern is too much for you (that fabric is PLUSH, btw) then just punch up your plain white bedding with a few snappy pillows to bring this trend into your home for “party season.”

HOMESPUN. Now, I don’t want you to get the idea that this fall is going to be devoid of color. There’s plenty of color to warm up your Winter, rest assured! I’ll be posting more on Fall’s most popular color trends (Hint: all you purple lovers are going to be very happy!) This picture not only shows color but the other big trend-the return of the Cozy Quilt! YAY! We were sad when they went away and we’re so happy their back. Cheery, comfy quilts with lovely patterns and that are reversible to adorable ticking stripes. Just add hot cocoa!

I’ll post more on some of the other FABULOUS things I saw there, so keep checking back. The new Catalog goes live August 1st. If you have any questions about any of the things you see here, please don’t hesitate to contact me at: theblissfulbedandbath@yahoo.com

That's right! I'm wearing FAUX FUR. In JULY. It's Vegas, baby!

Cheers and wishing you a bit of Fall this Summer!

What’s All the Hullabaloo About Bamboo?

Bamboo Bath Towels from Private Quarters

Bamboo Bath Towels from Private Quarters

Does it seem like bamboo is everywhere now? It is!

Have you ever experienced a bamboo floor? Most of the time it is absolutely beautiful-until you walk on it in high heels. Hope you like dimples!

Well, the qualities that make bamboo tricky for flooring are exactly what make it BRILLIANT for textiles.

1. It is soft. But it is still durable-those dimples in your floor are there because the fibers are giving way to your heels, not breaking under them.

2. It is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-microbial

3. While it is not, technically, a “green” material, bamboo is quick growing and can therefore be considered more ecologically responsible than many other fabrics.

And did I mention it is SOFT? I have both bamboo towels and bedsheets and I ADORE them! They feel “broken in” but look brand-new and wear like IRON. If you have not experienced bamboo textiles in your home, I highly recommend them. You can find shower curtains, even upholstery fabric woven from this yummy, luxurious fiber.

Sneek Peek and pre-order Private Quarters July Clearance Sale

First of all, I’d like to thank you all for your support and business! This has been my best year yet in Private Quarters. Not only have I had consistent business all year(thanks to YOU!) but I was able to donate HEAPS of new bedding and towels to women in need at Becky’s House here in San Diego. And some of you even ordered items from me just to donate to Becky’s House!
And I’d like to extend a special Thank You to all of you who regularly visit this blog. I really love addressing your comments and questions. In fact, you’ve helped make my blog such a success that I’ve been asked to be a guest speaker at the Private Quarters national convention this July in Las Vegas!

Some Consultants Get a Little Crazy at last year's Natl. Convention (Later that night we broke that bed!)

Anyway-I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all, there just isn’t any way for me to let you know how much I appreciate your business and referrals :)

I’ve already received emails from some of you who know we have a HUGE clearance sale every July. It’s always a closely guarded secret, especially which items from the catalog will be included. This year, though, I was able to wrangle a preview of the Sale Catalog- and I’m attaching it so YOU can get a look at it, too! Just clickHERE

There are some really great deals, many of which I know are going to sell out VERY quickly, especially the 500 Thread-count sheets. I have these myself and really like them. They are a little more crisp and cool than the 400s-for those of you who own those.

Our Deluxe 500 Threadcount Sheets on sale while supplies last- LOVE these colors!

If you see anything you’d like to order, please let me know ASAP. All sales are final and I’m taking pre-orders now so I can place orders from July 1st, when this pricing becomes active. If you have any questions about any of the products, please don’t hesitate to email me back.

Wishing you all a “Serene Summer!”

:)

Dorm Room Checklist-Feather Their Nest to Do Their Best!

Last month I talked about sleep deprivation and how a proper night’s sleep is a “quality of life” issue. In this season of graduations (seems I’ve been to so many!) I thought it would be a good idea to talk about the college-bound student in your life. What can we do to make sure he or she gets the rest necessary, not only to excel in their studies, but to become the leaders of tomorrow?

Maybe if she'd had a good night's sleep she'd notice class is over.

I remember my own college experience-I’d moved from sunny California to Boston in the middle of their most severe winter in history. Talk about culture shock! Freezing outdoors, but indoors they kept our dorms heated to a sultry 80 degrees 24/7. Which meant I slept with the windows open, sometimes with the snow blowing across my extra-long twin “bed.” Good times. As you can imagine,  I hardly got a good night’s sleep and was often dozing off while writing my lengthy papers (on my typewriter, remember those?) Now that I am spoiled rotten, sleeping on my 7 Layers of Bliss every night, I often think how much better my college experience would have been if only I’d had a few essentials. So here’s a checklist to help you kit-out your student for success:

-Allergen Barrier Mattress Cover: This one really doesn’t require explanation. I remember lying awake trying very hard not to imagine the scores of students who had tried to sleep on that mattress before me…ew.

-Fiberbed: I am a HUGE fan of Private Quarters featherbeds. My customers always write me to let me know what a tremendous difference their featherbeds have made in the quality of their sleep. Many of them host in-home presentations just so they can get the featherbed for free. For students, though, I recommend the microfiber-filled version. It’s less of an investment at $110 (page 8 in the catalog) and? It’s machine washable.

Dreaming of a Successful Future...

-Twin Extra Long Sheets: These were impossible to find when I was in school, but now you can get them anywhere. My personal faves for students are Private Quarters’ Modal Sheets for the warmer months and the Serenity Plush Sheets for winter.

-Sleeping Pillow: My favorite is the Deluxe Microfiber-filled pillow. At $35 it’s a very modest investment that makes a dramatic difference in one’s sleep quality. And, like the fiberbed, it’s also machine washable.

As far as blankets, comforters and the like-it kind of depends on the climate your student is heading for. In general, I always recommend machine washables for students. Another great gift? Rolls of quarters for the Laundry mat!

Here’s some other great things your student is sure to thank you for:

-A Microwave

-An Electric kettle

-TOWELS (my favorite are our Bamboo towels, which are naturally anti-microbial)

-Broom and Dustpan (it’s amazing how teenagers tend to forget these!)

-Sewing Kit

Fall will be here before we know it! Let’s send off our students with all the tools they need to succeed :)

Sleep Deprivation -Tips on Getting a Better Night’s Rest

We all know sleep is important. Studies show that adults require a minimum of 6 hours of restful sleep in order to function the following day. But what if you want to do more than just function? This is where your comfort becomes a “Quality of Life” issue. So here are some tips on how you can get the most out of your 40 winks:

1. Learn to Unwind Your Body- A warm bath with some essential oils, epsom salts or bubbles can go a long way to helping your body understand that it is time to rest. Also good? Stretching, Yoga and Meditation.

2. Free Your Mind from all the “to-dos” that could pop into your head while you are trying to sleep. One good way is to jot down all the things you want to remember to do the following day on a piece of paper or into your computer or smartphone. Remember: Your Bedroom is NOT your office!

3. Enjoy a warm beverage like decaffeinated tea or milk. Same principle as the warm bath, only you are relaxing your body from the inside out. Just remember to hit the restroom before you hit the sheets! You don’t want your restful sleep interrupted by Nature’s Call.

4. Got Comfort? Comfort is not a luxury. You need your sleep in order to get through your busy day. But you don’t have to drop a fortune on your mattress to get a blissful night’s sleep. It’s all in how your layer your bedding on top of your mattress that makes the difference between a restful night and a fitful one. It all starts with the right mattress cover and builds from there-check out our online catalog to learn more about our “Seven Layers of Bliss” sleep system.

New webcam, new VIDEO post! Are you down with DOWN?

I had 3 clients ask me about down vs. fiber this past week, so I thought I’d try another video post with my NEW camera-enjoy!

A certain, tiny, percentage of the population are in fact allergic to down and not the dander that clings to it. If that’s you-you have some wonderful fiber-fill products available to you. Even “Feather”beds! Aren’t I lucky? I get to work in my pajamas-lol! (btw-that Bamboo nightgown also comes in red and can be found in the catalog on page 38 and yes, it is SUPER soft & comfy!)

Design Trends in Bedding Spring 2010-”Never a Bridesmaid, ALWAYS a Bride!”

Last month I went up to Los Angeles to attend WestWeek (the interior design industry’s equivalent of “fashion week”) to view all the new collections and spot trends in furniture and textile design. Of COURSE I paid special attention to the beds! And I couldn’t help noticing one overwhelming trend in showroom after showroom…

Private Quarters' Reversible Satin robe & Bridal Sarong (cat.pg. 36)

That’s right, BRIDAL!! Everywhere I went, high-end luxury showrooms featured sumptuous beds that just seemed to be waiting “on bended knee” for a discerning bride to rest her weary head. Some beds featured glitz and sparkle. Gossamer, flowy, airy fabrics billowed over others…

Private Quarters' "Romance Skirted Coverlet" (Cat.pg.52)

Some were plush and cozy, like a winter bride-

Deluxe 600tc Duvet Cover and Manor Crest plush pillows (cat.pg.24)

And always in a bridal palette of whites, creamy ivories and antiqued shades of beige. Romance was EVERYWHERE! This season, whether you’re a bride, a bachelor or just someone who loves comfort and great design, you’ll feel like it’s your special day…every night!
